Church announces dates for pope's Cuba trip (AP)

HAVANA ? The Roman Catholic Church in Cuba has announced the dates and a partial itinerary for Pope Benedict XVI's much-anticipated visit to the island, the first by a pontiff since John Paul II's groundbreaking 1998 tour.

The church said in a statement Sunday that the pontiff will be in Cuba from March 26 to 28, following a visit to Mexico.

The itinerary outlined by the church is far less ambitious than that undertaken by John Paul 14 years ago. The 84-year-old pontiff will only be on the island for about 48 hours and appears to have no plans to visit important regional cities such as Santa Clara and Camaguey, both of which received John Paul.

Benedict will touch down on the afternoon of Mar. 26 in the western city of Santiago, Cuba's second largest, where he will be received personally by President Raul Castro. He'll then be driven through town in the glassed-in popemobile.

Benedict will make a private trip the following day to the sanctuary of Cuba's patron saint, the Virgin of Caridad del Cobre, then fly to Havana. In the capital, the pope will meet Havana Cardinal Jaime Ortega and other church leaders.

That afternoon, he will have a private meeting with Castro. There is no mention of Benedict also meeting Fidel Castro, who is retired but often weighs in on world events through opinion pieces published in Cuban state-run media.

On Mar. 28, Benedict will perform Mass at the sprawling Revolution Plaza, where hundreds of thousands turned out to see John Paul II. The pope will depart following the Mass and a trip through the capital in the popemobile.

Benedict has been noticeably frailer and weaker in recent months, according to religious leaders and others who have seen him, which could partly explain the trip's limited scope.

The visit coincides with the 400th anniversary of the appearance of the Virgin of Caridad del Cobre. But the timing also appears to reward the larger role the church has assumed in Cuba in recent years. Ortega personally negotiated the release of political prisoners in 2010 and 2011, and church magazines have become a forum for articles offering advice to Cuban leaders on a process of free-market reforms by Raul Castro.

The Cuban leader even cited Benedict's visit in announcing in December that Cuba would free 2,900 inmates as a humanitarian gesture, including a small number jailed for political crimes.

Purity builds a nation, not gold or oil - Otabil

Ghanaians have been challenged to live pure lives and by so doing, build a more prosperous nation.

The General Overseer of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), Pastor Dr. Mensa Otabil , who gave the exhortation said there is too much wrongdoing in the society ? corruption and breaking of the law ? and that if only Ghanaians will repent and live pure lives, the nation will not require foreign aid to become prosperous.

Pastor Otabil who was leading a Crossover worship service of the church at the Accra Sports Stadium to usher in the New Year, also predicted that Ghana will have peaceful elections in the 2012 polls, so much so that people will wonder what is going on, saying it is well with Ghana.

He declared the New Year, 2012 as a year of purity, explaining that to live a life of purity, one needs a clean heart, clean thoughts and clean hands.

?Our nation Ghana and its neighbours in Africa have struggled for years to build successful, economically viable nations but you and I know that it's been a very difficult process, and there are many reasons to give for that but I think at the root, or one of the key problems that we have is that there is too much of wrongdoing in all of us ? corruption in all of us, there is too much breaking of the law with all of us. If each one of us here live pure, Ghana will be turned around in one year. If each African decides to be honest, to be fair, to be kind, to be generous, if every worker decides they are not going to take a bribe, and every businessman decides they are not going to pay a bribe, and each one of us decides we are going to do our work honestly, we don't need any foreign aid, we will be able to build our own country.?

He said a pure heart, pure thoughts and clean hands make up the character that builds a nation, quoting Jesus Christ from the Matthew 5:8 ?Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.?

?All of us want to see God. A pure heart is the heart that sees God. If you want to see God in 2012, then the condition of your heart must be right. A pure heart is a heart that is cleansed from sin. A pure heart is a heart that is in union with God, and Jesus said that those who have a pure heart are blessed, and not only are they blessed, they will see God,? he said.

He urged Ghanaians to desire pure hearts and to pray to God to grant them same, while everyone endeavoured to control their thoughts.

?Before you do something ask yourself these questions ? it is true, is it noble, is it just, is it pure, is it lovely, is it virtuous. When you are talking to somebody ask yourself 'I'm I telling the truth? If all of us lie to one another, we become a nation of liars and that is not beautiful . We can have oil, we can have diamond, we can have gold, we can have everything we want those commodities do not build a nation, it is the character of the people that builds a nation. Oil is useless if we don't have a noble character to manage the oil that God has given to us. We can discover all the oil we want in the world , we can have the oil of Saudi Arabia but if we steal all the money, there will be nothing to benefit anybody.?

He said while none can claim perfection, we should strive towards it and live above reproach such that there can be no bad report of us, and our testimonies exemplary ones.

Pastor Otabil led the congregation to pledge to live pure lives and said 2012 will be an exciting year.

?People are worried about the elections of Ghana, I think we're going to have a very, very peaceful election. It's going to be so peaceful we will be looking round and say 'what is happening, it's too peaceful.' God is giving this country peace. Peace that passes understanding . Don't worry about that, God will give us peace. Don't let your heart be troubled. Don't fret, your heart, your life, is in God's hands. It is well with Ghana, it is well with our soul, it is well with our future, it is well with our destiny. The only thing you should worry about is to live in purity before God??

Bubbly Battle: Will Prosecco Edge Out Champagne on New Year's Eve? (Time.com)

This post is in partnership with Worldcrunch, a new global-news site that translates stories of note in foreign languages into English. The article below was originally published in La Stampa.

PARIS -- With the countdown to 2012 officially on, one question looms large -- at least in France and Italy: Prosecco or Champagne? For people outside of Europe, choosing which sparkling wine to toast the new year may seem like a minor issue. For Italians and French it is a matter of national pride.

Going into the holiday season, Prosecco -- the sparkling wine produced in northwestern Italy -- seems to have the edge this year, according to Coldiretti, Italy's largest farming group. Coldiretti reported that in the first nine months of 2011, 200 million of bottles of Prosecco were exported, versus "only" 192 million of bottles of Champagne. (See "Is the Party Over for the Champagne Cork?")

Italians are already claiming victory for its "underdog" Prosecco, which doesn't enjoy the same global name recognition as its more expensive French counterpart. France's Champagne makers, however, aren't quite ready to concede.

"Italians are crowing over a victory. They say their sparkling wine is exported more than Champagne is," read a recent article in the French newspaper Le Parisien. "But French wine makers dispute these data," the paper added.

"We are comparing two wines that cannot really be compared," says Thibaut le Mailloux, communications director for the Comit? Interprofessionnel du vin de Champagne, an organization that involves many of the Champagne industry's major players. "Spumante is an obscure denomination of sparkling wine, while Champagne has a guarantee of origin, and is produced in a specific and unique way," he added.

France is also quick to point out that Coldiretti's export stats don't include the final two months of the year, when according to Le Mailloux, 30% of Champagne business takes place. The battle over the New Year's toast, in other words, is not over yet. France's pricier bubbly might still rise to the ocassion.

NATO: 1 dead in noncombat incident in Afghanistan (AP)

KABUL, Afghanistan ? NATO says one of its service members has died in an incident that did not involve combat.

The statement said the incident occurred on Saturday, but provided no further details.

The death, the 28th in December, brought to 544 the number of NATO troops who died in Afghanistan in 2011.

The yearly total is considerably lower than for 2010, when more than 700 troops died. The numbers of wounded have remained consistently high, dipping only slightly from last year's total of more than 5,000 service members.

Despite the drop in the numbers of deaths, 2011 is the second-deadliest for NATO troops in the 10-year war.

California beats USC 53-49 in Pac-12 opener

Published: Thursday, Dec. 29, 2011 9:33 p.m. MST

By Janie Mccauley, Associated Press

BERKELEY, Calif. ? Allen Crabbe converted three free throws with 8.4 seconds left as California earned a hard-fought 53-49 victory over Southern California on Thursday night in the Pac-12 Conference opener for both schools.

Crabbe controlled the ball on the perimeter after USC 7-footer Dewayne Dedmon blocked Jorge Gutierrez's layup attempt. Crabbe was fouled by Eric Strangis on the left side of the 3-point arc as he heaved the ball up with the shot clock expiring.

Gutierrez had 13 points, seven assists, seven rebounds and four steals and Harper Kamp and Crabbe added 12 points apiece for Cal (11-3, 1-0), which remained unbeaten at Haas Pavilion.

Maurice Jones scored 17 points and knocked down three late 3-pointers to keep the Trojans (5-9, 0-1) close in the waning minutes.
