Why plants are smarter than us

Scientists have found that plants must do complex arithmetic to avoid starvation.?

Comparing someone?s intellect to that of a potted plant is no longer such an insult.

Scientists at the John Innes Centre, a British research institute that focuses on plants and microbiology, found that plants must do complex arithmetic to calculate the amount of food needed to get them through the long, dark night.

"This is the first concrete example in a fundamental biological process of such a sophisticated arithmetic calculation," said a JIC mathematical modeler,?Martin Howard.

The new research, published in eLife, reports that mechanisms in plants? leaves estimate the size of the plant?s starch store and the length of time before the sun rises and energy again becomes available. In daylight, plants use the sun?s energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into sugars and starches. Based on that information, the plant?s leaves appropriately adjust their rate of starch consumption to avoid starving before the sun comes up, but without being wasteful and harboring too much starch. At the end of the night, the plants project to have used 95 percent of their starch.

The precise calculations account for variations in daylight and accumulated starch stores.

?The calculations are precise so that plants prevent starvation but also make the most efficient use of their food,? said JIC metabolic biologist Alison Smith. ?If the starch store is used too fast, plants will starve and stop growing during the night. If the store is used too slowly, some of it will be wasted.?

Scientists proposed that information about the size of the starch store and nighttime-length is encoded in the concentrations of two kinds of molecules in the plant. The scientists have called those molecules S for starch and T for time. The S molecules stimulate starch consumption, and the T molecules inhibit that consumption, so the rate of starch consumption comes out to the ratio of S molecules to T molecules ? or S/T.

Scientists believe that further study of how plants regulate their starch consumption could give insights into more productive farming techniques.

"The capacity to perform arithmetic calculation is vital for plant growth and productivity," said Smith. "Understanding how plants continue to grow in the dark could help unlock new ways to boost crop yield."

So when faced with a tricky math problem, go ahead: vegetate.?

Everything you want to know about Android's new Navigation Drawer

Navigation Drawer

Google's Android developers have delivered a great video all about the new Navigation Drawer

We've talked before about how the Android team is serious about design. They want Android, and the great apps that developers create, to not only work well, but to look good. We noticed this at Google I/O in May, that there was a new (and long-awaited) focus on building applications that look like they belong. Apps with a consistent and elegant user interface, versus the jumble of different design styles and choices of the past.

It's a big undertaking. You have to account for different screen sizes, devices with or without the recommended button layout, and most of all you need to find a fluid look and feel that works well for the end user. Nobody likes an app that is difficult to use. Google tried to get everyone on-board with the action bar method, and it's a great solution for some things. But sometimes, you need to get dirty and have a list of user choices and options. That's where the new Navigation Drawer concept comes into play.

Grab your phone. Open the YouTube app or Google Play Books app. Swipe your finger to the right on the main screen (view). That's the new Navigation Drawer at work. Google Play Books could probably get away with just an action bar and overflow area (those three dots in the upper right) but the YouTube app has plenty of choices and options that would otherwise be buried three levels deep. The Navigation Drawer seems like a perfect way to present them all to the users -- you and me.

A lot of thought went into this, and luckily the Android developers are willing to share their thoughts about it all. Join Roman Nurik, Jens Nagel and Rich Fulcher after the break for 47 minutes of great information about why, where and when you would want to use the Navigation Drawer. Even if you're never going to design an Android app, it's a great watch and really drives the idea home.

Google Play for Education now accepting developer submissions

Google Play for Education now accepting developer submissions

Google's getting serious about education. Its Play for Education portal, announced last month at I/O, is creeping ever closer to a full launch, with a call for application submissions starting today. Developers that want to be considered for Google's curated storefront can mark their applications for consideration now via the Play Developer Console. But unlike the wild, wild west of the Play store at-large, where anything goes, not every education-focused app will get the greenlight. In fact, Google's submission process requires all applications marked as suitable for K-12 to first pass through a network of non-affiliated educators for evaluation before then being measured against the Play for Education store's requirements for classroom use. If selected, developer's applications will be made available to the many pilot programs currently underway across the country, with an eventual full-scale rollout when Play for Education officially launches sometime this fall.

Kane scores, Blackhawks lead Bruins 1-0 in Game 5

CHICAGO (AP) ? Patrick Kane scored his eighth goal of the postseason, and the Chicago Blackhawks led the Boston Bruins 1-0 through the first period in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup finals on Saturday night.

In a thrilling series that's seen only one game decided in regulation and was knotted at 2-all, the Blackhawks broke through in this one after both teams missed several chances in the early going. They grabbed the lead with 2:33 left in the period after a shot by Johnny Oduya closing in from the left point ricocheted off the stick of Boston defenseman Dennis Seidenberg.

Kane, who was to the left of the net, picked up the spinning puck and tucked it past Tuukka Rask into the lower left corner of the net. All that happened after Jonathan Toews muscled past Milan Lucic to carry the puck deep into the Boston zone.

Corey Crawford did his job in goal for Chicago with 11 saves after getting beaten five times to his glove side during Wednesday's 6-5 overtime victory.

Rask stopped seven of the eight shots he faced.

Boston outhit Chicago 23-9 in the period even though the Blackhawks indicated they would go right at the Bruins' Zdeno Chara, just as they did in Game 4. David Krejci had four of those hits.

Toews hit the post just under four minutes into the game, and Boston's Nathan Horton hit the crossbar right after that.

The Bruins had another chance midway through the first period when Jaromir Jagr came out of a scrum along the boards but got stopped from the edge of the crease.

Rask spread out and made a neat save with his chest or shoulder late in the period to stop a shot by Patrick Sharp closing in from the left circle.

Marian Hossa was in the lineup for Chicago as expected after missing the morning skate and practice on Friday. He was scratched from Game 3 because of an upper body injury but did play in Game 4. The Bruins also had center Carl Soderberg in the lineup over Kaspars Daugavins, another adjustment during arguably the wildest final in years.

Both teams have been doing whatever they can to get an edge, whether it was Chicago pairing Toews and Kane on the same line in Game 4 or Boston teaming Chris Kelly, Daniel Paille and Tyler Seguin in Game 2.

It had been 20 years since a championship series had at least three games go to overtime, and this is just the sixth time since 1927 it has happened. The only other final to feature more OT games during that stretch was when Toronto and Montreal played five in 1951.

Teams that have won Game 5 after splitting the first four have gone on to win the championship 15 of 22 times since the league went to a best-of-seven format in 1939. But in recent years, the pattern has not held. The Game 5 loser in that scenario has won the championship four of the past six times, with Boston taking out Vancouver in 2011.

PST: Liverpool could sell Spearing, Shelvey

Brendan Rodgers has deemed that midfielders Jonjo Shelvey and Jay Spearing are extra weight at Anfield and will look to move them, according to a report in the Mirror.

Shelvey, a member of the England U-21 squad that crashed and burned at the Euros this season, was linked with Stoke in the past while Tony Pulis was in charge, and apparently can leave for a bid of ?7 million ($10.8 million).

The 21-year-old attacking midfielder made 19 appearances in the Premier League last season (9 starts) but could only muster a single goal and did not record an assist.? Rodgers tested Shelvey at a pure attacking midfielder as well as a central midfielder and out on the left wing.

Spearing spent the last season on loan at Bolton Wanderers in the Championship, impressing with two goals and six assists from the defensive midfield.? The 24-year-old can apparently leave for ?3 million ($4.6 million).

He made a whopping 36 starts in the English second division, and picking up a ton of playing time as Bolton finished 7th, fighting for a playoff spot but fading down the stretch.

Zombies roam the animal kingdom ? and some of them might be after us

David Hughes / Penn State

One fungus took over the brain of this zombified ant, but the first fungus was sabotaged by a different type of parasitic fungus.

By Alan Boyle, Science Editor, NBC News

The zombies in "World War Z" are just actors ??but in the animal world, zombies are a fact of life. Evolution can come up with some fiendish twists: For example, there are some species that bend other creatures to their will to keep their bizarre life cycles going. Or just to feast on their delicious braaaains.

To celebrate the premiere of "World War Z," here's a top-ten list of zombies from the animal kingdom, finishing up with a particularly pernicious parasite that can pose a risk to humans:

Zombie ants: There are special kinds of?zombifying fungi that infect carpenter ants?in Thailand and Brazil. The fungus?grows into the ant's brain and compels it to climb down and clamp onto to the low leaves that provide the fungus with its favored breeding ground. After the ant dies, the fungus sprouts from its head and shoots out spores to infect other ants. But this zombie isn't invincible: Scientists recently discovered a different kind of fungus that can?castrate the zombifying fungus before it spreads.

Zombie bees: A parasitic fly known as Apocephalus borealis can inject its eggs into a honeybee's abdomen, where the fly larvae mature. The parasitized bees abandon their hives and walk in circles ? but eventually they fall over. "It really painted a picture of something like a zombie," says San Francisco State University's Andrew Core. About seven days after infection, the mature larvae burst out from the dead bees' bodies, renewing the gruesome circle of life. It gets worse: The zombie bees are spreading.

Zombie birds: Great tits look so cute when they're perched on a branch. You'd never know that they have a taste for bat brains. In Hungary, the birds listen for the calls sent out by the cave-dwelling pipistrelle bats when they rouse themselves from hibernation. Then they track down the groggy bats, crack their skulls open and eat their brains. Researchers found that the trick is passed down from one generation of great tits to the next, providing an example of cultural transmission in avian species. The great tits helped inspire the title of Becky Crew's book about bizarre biology, "Zombie Birds, Astronaut Fish and Other Weird Animals." ??

Zombie caterpillars: You don't want to be around when a zombified caterpillar turns to goo. There's a species of baculovirus that infects gypsy moth caterpillars and sends them up into the treetops to die. When the caterpillar's body liquefies, the ooze drips down onto other caterpillars?? creating more zombies. Scientists say a single gene in the virus interferes with the caterpillar's hormones, apparently triggering the uncharacteristic urge to climb during the day.?

Zombie crabs: A tiny barnacle called Sacculina?can latch onto male crabs?and blast them with so much estrogen that they dig empty nests, made to order?for the barnacle to lay its eggs inside. If the crab host happens to be a female, no problem: The barnacle merely wipes out the host's reproductive system, and then sets her digging.

A zombie cricket jumps into a pool and dies, which gives the mind-controlling parasitic worm inside the cricket its opportunity to swim away.

Zombie crickets: Parasitic hairworms have been known to invade crickets, take over their nervous system and then force their?buggy hosts?to drown themselves?so that the grown worm can swim out and look for a mate. Scientists aren't exactly sure how crickets pick up the parasite,?but it may involve ingesting water or bugs that contain hairworm larvae.

Zombie fish: What could be ickier than having a zombie crustacean eat out your tongue?? and then take its place in your mouth? That's what the beastie known as Cymothoa exigua does to spotted rose snappers. C. exigua latches onto the fish's tongue and sucks the blood out of it until it falls off. Then it attaches itself to the stub that's left behind, and changes its diet from blood to fish mucus. The fish and the parasite carry on that way for the rest of their lives. If you're freaked out by the "Alien" movies, do not look at this picture.

Zombie ladybugs:?Dinocampus coccinellae, a species of parasitic wasp, lays a single egg inside the abdomen of a ladybug. The wasp larva eats its way through the ladybug's insides, then pops out and spins a cocoon. End of story for the ladybug, right? Not necessarily. The ladybug often lives on as one of the undead, partially paralyzed on top of the cocoon. There's evidence that the wasp larva provides resources to keep the ladybug alive, while the ladybug provides an extra layer of protection from bugs that might otherwise eat the larva.?

Zombie spiders: Another kind of zombifying wasp targets the orb spider known as Plesiometa argyra. The wasp temporarily paralyzes the spider, lays an egg on the tip of its abdomen, and leaves it to mature. The orb spider goes about its business, weaving its usual circular webs ? until, one night, the wasp larva sends a chemical signal to the spider's brain. The spider spins a weird-looking web, seemingly designed to provide shelter from rain, wind and predators. The next day, the larva kills the spider ??and moves into the home it programmed the spider to build. ??

Zombie rats ... and humans??The most insidious zombie of the animal world may well be the tiny parasite called Toxoplasma gondii, or Toxo for short. This parasite can reproduce sexually only in cat intestines, which poses a challenge when the little critters wind up in cat poop. Here's how Toxo gets back inside the cat: When mice or rats nibble on the poop, they also gobble up some of the Toxo parasites. The parasites migrate to the brain, where they release chemicals that make the rodents lower their guard when they're around cats. Scientists think that Toxo-infected mice start to regard the smell of cat pee as something sexy rather than a cause for alarm. The cats eat the smitten rats, and the Toxo life cycle begins again.

The scary part is that Toxo can find its way into the human nervous system as well. About 30 percent of the world's population is thought to be infected. Pregnant women should be careful about avoiding infection, because the parasite can pose a risk to the unborn baby. There's also some evidence of a connection between Toxo and changes in mood or personality, and perhaps even conditions such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. The linkage isn't rock-solid, and most of those who are infected suffer no apparent effects. But if you need a plot device for your next zombie-movie script, Toxo is a good place to start.

Going Inside ?Frances Ha? with Greta Gerwig ? Nerdist

by Dan Casey on June 21, 2013

The rise of the manic pixie dream girl in pop culture isn?t necessarily a recent phenomenon; it?s just coincidental that these twee indie-darling types are dominating the TV and film landscapes as Zooey Deschanels and Zoe Kazans (what is it about the name Zoe?) strum ukeleles and infiltrate our psyches. Recently, we?ve begun to see more honest, grounded counterexamples of what these idealized girls are actually like in real life through TV shows like Lena Dunham?s Girls, writers like Tao Lin, and, most recently, in the indie feature?Frances Ha.?

Co-written with director Noah Baumbach,?Frances Ha stars Greta Gerwig as Frances Handley, a 27-year-old modern dancer living in New York and stuck in a state of arrested development, an increasingly common phenomenon among twenty-somethings whose ascension into adulthood is delayed by college and the gradual shift towards starting families later in life. For lack of a better term, it seems like we have a problem keeping our shit together, and Frances is no exception.

Whimsical, waifish and thrill-seeking,?Frances is shown in all her weirdness, selfishness, and immaturity as she spirals out of control while, seemingly, everyone around her begins cleaning up their acts. It?s an honest, raw portrayal of a very familiar character. I went to college with Frances. I?m friends with Frances. Hell, at points in my life, I?ve even been Frances. It?s an intensely relatable and touching film that is alternately captivating and cringe-inducing, like watching a car accident in slow motion.

To take you deeper into the world of?Frances Ha,?I caught up with writer/star Greta Gerwig to talk to her about crafting the story, if we?re screwed as a generation and whether or not you need to be obscenely wealthy to make it as an artist in the big city.

Nerdist: First of all, I really enjoyed the film. It?s excruciatingly enjoyable; I found it both captivating and hard to watch, and I mean that in the best way possible.

Greta Gerwig: Oh, I?m so glad. I feel like that?s what we were going for. Glad to hear it was successful.

N: Tell us a little bit of how this story came to life.

GG: It was a long collaboration in the writing process. We wrote it in the course of a year about, on and off. We?re very similar writers in that we both find the story we?re telling through the dialogue we?re writing, finding what the character is doing, what she?s interested in, as opposed to dictating the story and working backwards. So, it was really writing scenes and getting these moments and kind of discovering the story as we?re writing.

N: It has a very grounded, natural feel to it so if it?s occurring spontaneously. The dialogue has a very honest sensibility to it. To get that feeling, did you do a lot of improv on set? Or was it just painstakingly including all the starts and stops of natural speech?

GG: No, we didn?t do any improv at all. We were using the script to the letter. There was zero improv. It was really taking the time to get the script as good as possible and trying to execute it as best we could.

frances1

N: Frances is a very familiar character; that person who just got out of college, moved to New York, and tried to make a go of it in their chosen fields. I knew these girls; I?m friends with these girls, so I?m curious ? what is it about this person that speaks to you?

GG: Well, I definitely think that, being in New York City in my twenties, I both sympathize with Frances and see Frances-like people everywhere. It?s interesting because to me the character really goes beyond that particular demographic. As much as it certainly evokes the specificity of living in New York in your twenties, it wasn?t intended to be, like, a global statement about a generation. It?s just really about this one person. I feel like that also happens in writing, that through specificity you find something universal.

N: Gotcha. I know you weren?t trying to make that statement, but it seems to me that through films like this, television shows like Girls, and the writing of people like Tao Lin, that, generationally-speaking, we have a problem getting our shit together. Do you think this is indicative of a larger trend or it more of a case-by-case basis?

GG: Uh, I think it?s sort of a case-by-case basis. I mean, I see people who do have their shit together of my generation as much as I see people who don?t. I think in some ways we?re, as a generation, much more honest about not having our shit together as opposed to previous generations who felt like they had to fake it until they made it.

Frances3

N: Another line that really struck a chord with me ? and I?m sure you?ve been asked about this a lot ? Frances says, ?Only rich people can be artists in New York.? It?s something that seems true of Los Angeles as well. It?s a hurdle that creative types run up against, but how much truth is there in that line, do you think?

GG: You know, unfortunately, I think there?s a lot of truth to that line, especially as New York has become prohibitively expensive to anyone besides the very rich. There?s still areas of Brooklyn and Queens and the Bronx where it?s possible, but it?s very frustrating to be a young artist without a trust fund. I?ve talked to a lot of people who feel that way in New York, and that?s nothing against people who have trust funds. It would be awesome if I had one. I don?t feel anything against that, but I just think it?s one of those things that?s very difficult if you?re trying to make a go of it in New York City.

N: Yeah, I think that?s pretty apt description. So, this is the second feature film you?ve written, correct?

GG: Well, I?ve been credited as a writer on a few feature films, but this really feels like the first one I?ve written that feels like a true representation of my writing, because the writing was so precise and there was no improvisation and it feels like, ?Yeah, I wrote all these words, or I co-wrote all these words,? so I feel like it?s the first time that I can properly take credit as a writer. Yes, there?s been a few others, but, yeah.

N: Is screenwriting something you see yourself doing more of? Do you find you enjoy it more or less than acting?

GG: Well, I really started out doing everything, I was writing plays a lot in college, and also acting, and also directing. Really, in some ways, me writing or acting or producing, they?re really just me doing what I?ve always done but in a more public way. And I think that I?ve always been a person who found their sweet spot in exploring different positions in the film industry or theater industry and I think I?ll probably continue doing all that because it?s really where I?m most at home, wearing a lot of different hats.

Frances4

N: It?s nice that you can just express yourself in so many different ways. That?s rad. Another thing I really enjoyed about the film is that, even though you go to other locations, New York very much seems like it?s a character unto itself. And, obviously, shooting in black and white is going to evoke comparisons to Manhattan. Was that at all a consideration going into this? Talk to me about the decision to film in black and white.

GG: It was a really intuitive decision in many ways: we didn?t intellectualize it too much. We decided we want to make it in black and white, it was like ?Okay, yes. That?s right.? As with so many intuitive decisions, you find the logic in it after you make the decision. I think for us, it gave it this instant feel of ?cinema? that we wanted to invoke, in the music and the way it looked, and the it was shot was done very formalistically.

It?s not handheld; all the shots are very composed. And the black and white made it feel like a moment of cinema, and that was very exciting. And it was also instantly nostalgic so it captured a mood that we were looking for in the writing of it, which was memorializing these moments as they pass. The moments of going for your dream but then giving up on it or changing it, or of the last great date with your best friends, or the last time you really go for something. I mean, those moments, you?re not aware that they?re the last moments while they?re happening, you?re only aware of them afterwards, and the black and white seems to speak to that melancholy and nostalgia for things that are just past.

N: I think it?s really interesting as well as a viewer, because you can see the before and after effects so you can sort of read into these things, but when they?re happening to you it?s hard to take that sort of top-down view.

GG: Right. Frances doesn?t know the end of the story. Neither does the viewer, but the viewer can see what?s happening more clearly than Frances can.

N: Yeah, exactly. All right, one last question: what would be inside your ideal burrito?

GG: Oh. Well, like, refried beans, Mexican rice, you know the rice that?s been cooked too well in the spices, Oaxaca cheese, that really great, melty Mexican cheese? I guess, like, carnitas and then sliced avocado on top with super hot salsa.

Judge blocks audio expert testimony in Trayvon Martin case

By Barbara Liston

ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) - Two voice identification experts who suggested that unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin screamed for help before he was shot and killed by George Zimmerman will not be allowed to testify at his murder trial, the judge in the case has ruled.

The ruling by Judge Debra Nelson was released on Saturday, marking the last major hurdle before opening statements in the high-profile case begin on Monday in Seminole County courthouse in Sanford, Florida.

Prosecutors had sought to call audio experts to testify about a 911 emergency call in which screams for help can be heard in the background during an altercation between Zimmerman and Martin before the shooting.

The screams could be pivotal evidence and help identify who was the aggressor on the night of the February 2012 killing. Zimmerman's family and supporters claim the voice was his, while Martin's parents insist the voice belonged to their son.

Last year, an FBI expert said a voice analysis of the call was inconclusive.

David Weinstein, a Miami lawyer and former prosecutor, called the ruling a victory for Zimmerman's defense team.

"Now there won't be a witness who can 'identify' the voice with certainty as a particular person," he said. "Each side can argue who they believe the voice belongs to and the jurors will have to decide who they hear."

Prosecutors say Zimmerman followed and confronted Martin despite a police dispatcher telling him not to pursue the 17-year-old. Zimmerman, 29, has said the two fought and that he shot Martin because he feared for his life.

An all-female jury will decide whether Zimmerman is guilty of second-degree murder, a charge that carries a potential life sentence. Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty.

Nelson said in her 12-page order that the decision does not prevent either side from playing the 911 tape and presenting witnesses familiar with Zimmerman's and Martin's voices from stating their opinions.

Lead defense attorney Mark O'Mara has called the recording "the most significant piece of evidence in the case."

Two state experts, in what they qualify as tentative or probable findings because of the poor quality of the recording, have said that the chilling screams heard in the background came from Martin.

Lawyers for Zimmerman, a former neighborhood watch volunteer, sought to block the testimony on grounds that the methods used by the state's voice recognition experts were based on questionable science.

Audio experts who testified for the defense in a lengthy pre-trial hearing argued that voice recognition techniques cannot identify an individual from screams made under extreme duress.

On Friday, the judge also dismissed a defense motion to bar certain words and phrases from the prosecution's opening statement.

She ruled prosecutors could allege that Zimmerman, who is Hispanic, "profiled" Martin but ordered them not to use the term "racial profiling."
