Syrian forces pound rebels in Aleppo

ALEPPO, Syria (Reuters) - Syrian troops said they had recaptured a district of Syria's largest city Aleppo, after heavy fighting against rebels who remain in control of swathes of the commercial hub despite being pushed out of the capital Damascus.

The past two weeks have seen forces of President Bashar al-Assad struggle as never before to maintain their grip on the country after a major rebel advance into the two main cities and a July 18 explosion that killed four top security officials.

Government forces have succeeded in imposing their grip on Damascus but rebel fighters gained control of parts of Aleppo, a city of 2.5 million people, where Reuters journalists have toured neighborhoods dotted with Free Syrian Army checkpoints flying black and white Islamist banners.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said attacks on Aleppo were putting the nail in the coffin of Assad's government, showing he lacks the legitimacy to rule.

"If they continue this kind of tragic attack on their own people in Aleppo, I think it ultimately will be a nail in Assad's own coffin," Panetta said, speaking to reporters at the start of a weeklong trip to the Middle East and North Africa.

"What Assad has been doing to his own people and what he continues to do to his own people makes clear that his regime is coming to an end. It's lost all legitimacy," he said, adding, "It's no longer a question of whether he's coming to an end, it's when.

Fighting for the past several days has focused on the Salaheddine district in the southwest of Aleppo, where government troops have been backed by helicopter gunships.

Rebel fighters, patrolling opposition districts in flat-bed trucks flying green-white-and-black "independence" flags, said they were holding off Assad's forces in Salaheddine. However, the government said it had pushed them out.

"Complete control of Salaheddine has been (won back) from those mercenary gunmen," an unidentified military officer told Syrian state television late on Sunday. "In a few days safety and security will return to the city of Aleppo."

Reuters journalists in the city were not able to approach the district after nightfall on Sunday to verify whether rebels had been pushed out. The pro-opposition Syrian Observatory for Human rights said fighting was continuing there.

The government also declared victory on Sunday in the battle for the capital, which the rebels assaulted in force two weeks ago but have been repulsed in unprecedented fighting.

"Today I tell you, Syria is stronger ... In less than a week they were defeated (in Damascus) and the battle failed," Foreign Minister Walid Moualem said on a visit to Iran, Assad's main ally in the region.

"So they moved on to Aleppo and I assure you, their plots will fail."

Rebel-held areas of Aleppo visited by Reuters were almost empty. Fighters were basing themselves in houses.

Cars entering one Aleppo district came under fire from snipers and a Reuters photographer saw three bodies lying in the street. Unable to move them to hospital for fear of shelling, residents had placed frozen water bottles on two of the corpses to slow their decomposition in the baking heat.

A burnt out tank lay in the street, while nearby another one had been captured intact and covered in tarpaulin. Burnt cars could be seen in many streets, some marked with "shabbiha" - a reference to pro-Assad militiamen.

Near the centre of town, most shops were shuttered, some with "Strike" painted over them. The only shop doing business was a bakery selling subsidized bread, where the queue stretched around the block.

U.N. Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Valerie Amos said 200,000 people had fled the fighting in and around Aleppo in the last two days, and the violence across Syria made it hard for humanitarian agencies to reach them.

"Many people have sought temporary shelter in schools and other public buildings in safer areas. They urgently need food, mattresses and blankets, hygiene supplies and drinking water."

Assad's ruling structure draws strongly on his Alawite minority sect, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam, while his opposition is drawn largely from the Sunni Muslim majority, backed by Sunni leaders who rule nearly all other Arab states.

That has raised fears the 16-month conflict could spread across the Middle East, where a sectarian divide between Sunnis and Shi'ites has been at the root of violence in Iraq, Lebanon, Bahrain and elsewhere.

Shi'ite Iran demonstrated its firm support for Assad by hosting his foreign minister. At a joint news conference with Moualem, Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi rebuked the West and Arab states for holding the "illusion" that Assad could be easily be replaced in a managed transition.

CRUCIAL TEST

In Damascus, many residents have fled fighting in the outskirts for relative safety in the heart of the capital.

In the centre, shops open only between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., food prices have soared and no one dares walk outside after dusk, even in the holy month of Ramadan when streets are normally packed late into the night with people breaking the fast.

"To begin with I was with the regime, for sure," said Ahmed, from one of the southern suburbs where the army, backed by helicopters and tanks, launched its counter-offensive.

"But now, no, the regime must go. Take what they want with them, but they must go."

The battle for Aleppo is a decisive test of the government's ability to put down the revolt after the July 18 explosion killed four of its top security officials and wrecked the Assad family's image of untouchable might.

It has committed huge military resources to Aleppo after losing control of outlying rural areas and some border crossings with Turkey and Iraq.

Arizona deputy says he risked life for illegal immigrant

PHOENIX (Reuters) - A deputy from a controversial Arizona sheriff's office countered accusations of racial profiling on Thursday, telling a court that he had risked his life to rescue a Latino illegal immigrant from armed kidnappers.

Carlos Rangel told a civil trial alleging Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio that, at the behest of federal immigration police, he went undercover to play the role of the immigrant's relative to meet kidnappers, one of whom pointed a gun at him.

The kidnappers were arrested and the immigrant was released.

Asked by defense lawyer Tom Liddy, Rangel if he was an "anti-Hispanic bigot", Rangel answered: "No. I am not."

Arpaio, who styles himself "America's toughest sheriff," and his office are defendants in a class-action lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Phoenix that will test whether police can target illegal immigrants without racially profiling Hispanic citizens and legal residents.

The 80-year-old lawman testified this week he was against racial profiling and denied his office arrested people because of the color of their skin.

The sheriff, who is seeking re-election to a sixth term in November, has been a lightning rod for controversy over his aggressive enforcement of immigration laws in the state, which borders Mexico, as well as his investigation into the validity of President Barack Obama's birth certificate.

Arizona was in the news last month when the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a key element of the state's crackdown on illegal immigrants requiring police to investigate those they stop and suspect of being in the country illegally.

Arpaio faces a separate, broader lawsuit filed by the U.S. Justice Department in May, alleging systematic profiling, sloppy and indifferent police work and a disregard for minority rights.

'RUDE' AND 'MOCKING'

The civil lawsuit was lodged in the name of Manuel Ortega Melendres, one of five Hispanics who say they were stopped by deputies because they were Latino, which Arpaio denies. It was later opened to all Latino drivers stopped since 2007.

Melendres, a Mexican tourist on a valid visa in a truck was pulled over ostensibly because the white driver was speeding.

Rangel, who arrested Melendres, was asked by plaintiffs' counsel if he had questioned the driver. He told the court he had no grounds to investigate the driver.

When asked by Liddy if he had ever racially profiled anyone while working at the sheriff's office, Rangel, a 13-year veteran of the force, replied: "No".

In later testimony, a Hispanic woman who is a U.S. citizen told the court she was pulled over by a sheriff's deputy in 2009 on suspicion she had drugs, alcohol and weapons in her car as she drove home from studying at a Phoenix valley university.

Despite telling the deputy she was pregnant, Lorena Escamilla said, she was thrown roughly onto the back seat of his patrol car. A subsequent search of her car did not find any drugs. While she was cited for failure to produce identification and not having insurance, charges against her were dropped.

Escamilla said she later filed a charge of assault with Phoenix police department against the deputy and has since been fearful of being pulled over by the officer.

Also testifying was a Hispanic mother who was in a vehicle with a group of Boy Scouts that was pulled over in 2009 by a deputy for speeding while returning from the Grand Canyon.

Diona Solis, who is also a U.S. citizen, said the deputy was "rude" and "mocking" and unnecessarily requested identification from the boys in the car aged 8 to 11, among them her son.

"The boys were minors ... I thought it was unreasonable to ask them for IDs ... they hadn't done anything wrong," she said.

Chevron to invest $2 billion in Congo-Angola oil field

BRAZZAVILLE, July 29 (Reuters) - Chevron Corp plans to invest $2 billion to develop its Lianzi oilfield straddling the maritime border between Republic of Congo and Angola, a company official said on Sunday.

"Production from the Lianzi field will begin in 2015 and investments will cost $2 billion," Katia Mounthault-Tatu, a Chevron spokeswoman, told Reuters.

State revenues from the field, which holds proven reserves of 70 million barrels, will be split 50-50 between Congo and Angola, the two countries confirmed in an agreement on Friday.

Congo produced 105 million barrels of crude oil last year. Angola pumps around 1.8 million barrels per day.

AUTO enthusiasts are gearing up for the highlight of the classic car calendar.

Oxfordshire?s finest Morris Minors, Minis and MGs will take over Court Place Farm in Marston for the fifth Cowley Classic Car Show on Sunday, August 12, from noon.

Most vehicles will have a connection with Cowley ? including a Morris Motors factory fire engine from the1930s.

Oxford Isis Rotary Club press officer and event co-organiser Malcolm Fearn said: ?We anticipate having some 200 vehicles, with around 150 pre-registered.

?It started off as a celebration of vehicles with a Cowley connection, Morris, Minis and MGs.

?This year we have spread our wings and said anyone who thinks their car is a classic should bring it along.?

Last year?s oldest car was made in 1907, and the oldest this time is currently a 1924 Swift.

The exhibition, organised by the rotary club, will raise funds for the Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance.

Also on display will be an Issetta bubble car, a variety of Rolls Royces and Bentleys.

There will also be Reliant Robin that three Brize Norton servicemen ? Cpl James Booth, Sgt Mark McNeil, and Snr Aircraftsman Daniel Wellstead ? aim to drive to Malta in aid of the Everyman male cancer charity.

One family will be bringing five of their seven Minis down to show off.

Chevron profits slip with oil price dip

(Reuters) - Chevron Corp , the second-largest U.S. oil company, reported a lower quarterly profit on Friday as oil prices weakened from a year earlier, though fatter refining margins cushioned the blow.

Second-quarter net income fell to $7.2 billion, or $3.66 per share, from $7.7 billion, or $3.85 per share, in the year-ago quarter.

The company's upstream business - oil and gas production - posted an 18 percent profit drop to $5.6 billion, while its downstream refining business saw profit jump 80 percent to $1.88 billion.

Chevron said earlier this month that industry benchmark margins on the Gulf Coast rose more than $4 per barrel to $24.89, while West Coast margins improved to $21.32 per barrel, their highest three-month average in four years.

Chevron's largest refinery is in Mississippi, with 330,000 barrels per day of capacity, while its two California plants can together refine 518,000 bpd.

Profits at larger rival Exxon Mobil Corp fell short of expectations on Thursday as oil and gas output sagged and its chemical unit faced weak margins.

Shares in Chevron rose less than 1 percent in premarket trading.

PHILADELPHIABreast cancer patients whose tumors lacked the retinoblastoma tumor suppressor gene (RB) had an improved pathological response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy, researchers at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson report in a retrospective study published in a recent online issue of Clinical Cancer Research.

Many breast cancer patients undergo neoadjuvant therapy to reduce the size or extent of the cancer before surgical intervention. Complete response of the tumor to such treatment signifies an improved overall prognosis. Today, no marker is applied to identify tumors which will respond to such treatment, and as a result, only a subset of patients exhibit benefit from it.

"We found that loss of RB was associated with better pathological response rates in breast cancer patientsat various stages and representing multiple molecular subtypeswho were administered neoadjuvant chemotherapy," said Agnieszka Witkiewicz, M.D., Associate Professor of Pathology, Anatomy and Cell Biology at Thomas Jefferson University.

Erik Knudsen, Ph.D, Professor of Cancer Biology and the Hilary Koprowski Chair in Cancer Biology, was excited that discoveries from his life-long research on the RB-pathway were making there way into the clinic.

"This represents a potential new biomarker that could be used to tailor treatment plans for women considering neoadjuvant therapy and is a testament to the importance of cancer research," he said.

For the study, researchers, including Gordon Schwartz, M.D., Director of the Jefferson Breast Care Center and Adam Ertel, Ph.D., Bioinformatics Specialist, Department of Cancer Biology, performed a combination of gene expression profiling to identify those with RB loss and direct histological analysis in over 1,000 breast cancer patients who had undergone neoadjuvant therapy. These patients represented distinct subtypes of breast cancer and were treated with multiple different therapeutic regimens.

RB loss was associated, the team found, with an improved response to all the neoadjuvant regimens investigated in the major subtypes of breast cancer.

"Together, these data indicate that the loss of RB, which occurs relatively frequently in locally advanced disease, could be a useful tool for defining patients that experience an improved response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy," said Dr. Witkiewicz. "Based on these findings, we have initiated a prospective clinical trial at Jefferson, evaluating the association of RB and another marker, PTEN, with the response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy."

BALTIMORE (AP) ? The 74-year-old mother of Hall of Fame infielder Cal Ripken was safe Wednesday, a day after an armed man abducted her from her home northeast of Baltimore, police said.

Vi Ripken was kidnapped between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. Tuesday by a man who forced her into her car, according to Aberdeen police. She was found about 6:15 a.m. Wednesday unharmed in her car near her home in Aberdeen, some 25 miles from Baltimore.

Ripken earned the nickname "Iron Man" for playing in 2,632 consecutive games during his 21-year career with the Baltimore Orioles and is a hero to many baseball fans.

Vi Ripken described her abductor as a tall, thin white man with glasses, but police spokesman Lt. Fred Budnick had no other details.

"This has been a very trying time for our family, but we are grateful and relieved that mom is back with us, safe and healthy," the Ripken family said in a statement. "We want to thank everyone for their tremendous support, especially all of the law enforcement agencies that worked so hard and quickly."

The family said that it could not comment further due to the ongoing investigation.

Shocked Aurora vows to remember shooting victims

?AURORA, Colo. ? Well-wishers,?shocked townspeople and family members of the victims sang and prayed Sunday night and vowed to remember those who died?in?a?horrific movie theater shooting rampage,?not the act of violence that tore apart their quiet city.

?We are a family in Aurora," said Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan. "We are good hard-working people who believe in the goodness of our fellow man. We are coming together as a family would.?

Colorado Gov.?John Hickenlooper read aloud the names of the 12 people killed in the shooting, and after each one?the crowd chanted?in unison:?"We will remember."

Hickenlooper also?deliberately avoided mentioning the name of?the 24-year-old suspect, James Eagan Holmes, who allegedly wounded 58 other theatergoers at Friday's?Batman movie premiere. ?I refuse to say his name," he said. "In my house, we?re just going to call him Suspect A.?

At the conclusion of the vigil outside Aurora City Hall, members of the crowd held aloft lit candles and sang "Amazing Grace."

Tears flowed freely among the hundreds?of mourners who packed?a grassy area?for the ceremony, but overall the crowd seemed surprisingly upbeat. Many?in attendance held?flags, flowers, signs and balloons. Among the messages on the signs: ?Like the dark knight, we will rise again. We are all Colorado,"?and "Be praying for families! Colorado is family!" A large banner at the rear read, "Angels walk with those who grieve."?

Many of those at the vigil?knew at least one of the victims, or their family members.

Deajanae Elliott was part of a group of several dozen friends of shooting victim Micayla Medek, 23, who wore Hello Kitty regalia to honor the 23-year-old, a big fan of the Japanese cartoon character: Some held candles in Hello Kitty cups, many wore pink T-shirts and others sported stickers or temporary tattoos.?

"She's looking down and smiling at us with all the Hello Kitty she sees," said Elliot, who attended high school with Medek.?

A group of postal workers turned out to support colleague Tom Sullivan, whose 27-year-old son, Alex M. Sullivan, was among the dead. Among them was Charles Garcia, 55, who said his son was in another room at the theater when the shooting occurred. Two of his son's coworkers also were shot, including one of the dead, Matt McQuinn.?

"He's seeing a counselor," Garcia said. "He's just having trouble grasping why a senseless thing has to happen like this."

Joey Maestas, 25, a graphic designer from Brighton who works in the Aurora area, said he came to seek something positive amid the tragedy.

As many as 12 people were killed and 50 injured at a shooting at the Century 16 movie theatre in Aurora, Colo. early Friday during the showing of the latest Batman movie.

"It's the best way to remember the ones we lost," he said of the vigil.

"To come together and to find love in tragedy and .. not dwell on who we lost,?but be thankful for what we have," he said. "When Hickenlooper?said ... 'I won't say his name,' that was amazing. It was a good battle cry ... to not give into this guy and his agenda and wanting to push fear."?

After meeting with grieving families of a massacre that left 12 people dead, President Barack Obama says that the entire nation prays for them.

As the vigil was getting under way, President Barack Obama addressed the media at a nearby?hospital, where many of the victims were treated.

?I came to them not so much as president, but as a father and a husband,? Obama said, after meeting with family members of the dead and a number of hospitalized survivors.?"We can all understand what it would be to have someone taken from us in this fashion."

?Most of the conversation was filled with memory,? he said of his talks with the victims' families. ?It was an opportunity for families to describe how wonderful their brother , or son or sister had been. ? I conveyed to them ?? that I was there to serve as representative of the entire country and let them know that we are thinking of them at this moment and will think about them every day.?

The shooting also hung heavy over?church services in Aurora Sunday morning.

?I just remember going up and driving by the theater? late Friday, Pastor Jeff Noble told his New Life Community Church congregation. ?I just started bawling like a baby because I think it was then that it hit me. This wasn?t some TV show. This wasn?t some event that happened 1,000 miles away ? it happened in our community.?

Like others who spoke with NBC News, Noble had seen movies at the AMC Theater Century 16, located in a bustling mall here. He couldn?t explain why the attack had happened in Aurora, a suburb of Denver that retains a rural feel, with rolling grass plains and wildlife often spotted?from the roadside.

Terry Jackson, who lived for 20 years in Aurora and?now resides in nearby Lafayette, described his former home as a ?peaceful suburb? that was both cosmopolitan and laid back.

?I just could not imagine anything like this ever happening, especially in the city. I certainly never thought of it as a dangerous place,? said the 50-year-old software engineer.

As detectives pored over evidence from the home of Aurora shooting suspect James Holmes, it became clear how complicated the investigation might be. NBC's Mike Taibbi reports.

Jackson said he was ?very angry? about the attack and the fallout, and noted that an online commenter had called Colorado the ?mass murder capital of the world.?

?We?ve got mountains. We?ve got ? a really beautiful city,? he said. ?But this ? and Columbine, that?s what we?re known for.?

Jackson, his wife, Donna, and their 20-year-old son brought a bouquet of white and yellow flowers to a makeshift memorial started on an empty lot Saturday across the way from the theater, which had been closed to the public following the attack as investigators removed bodies from the crime scene.

A man who had posted crosses for the victims of Columbine High School came to the memorial site on Sunday and placed 12 white crosses for those slain in the theater. Columbine High School, where 13 students were killed in a shooting spree in 1999, is about half an hour from Aurora.

Among the 12 who died early Friday at a movie theater in Aurora, Colo. were fathers, mothers, a little girl ? even heroes. NBC's Kristen Dahlgren reports.

?

It will be a while before wounds heal, if they do completely, said Noble, the local pastor.

?There?s always a scar and there?s always a hole, something that?s missing in their lives,? he said. ?For a number of people, there is going to be a new normal.?
